I went to the hairdresser's shortly before Christmas, and while he was washing my hair, the hairdresser's apprentice, Jake, asked me the usual polite question about what I was doing for the festivities. I replied that I was going to Essex to stay with my in-laws, and his whole face changed (I could see his reflection in the mirror opposite!).
